This, of course, is nothing new: English has always taken from other languages. It is a glorious hybrid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this may be a cause for celebration in some aspects, it necessarily makes things difficult for the English language teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>How do I know if the English I am presenting to my students in the classroom is \u2018correct\u2019 English?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Is this the English that native speakers are actually using, or something that is preserved in an out-of-date textbook?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Do the \u2018rules\u2019 I learnt at school and university still hold true?<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>And given that most English is now used in interactions between non-native speakers, what standards apply?<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These are all questions that this course, brought to you in association with <a aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nile-elt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nile<\/a>, will address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This course will cover the following areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Gaining familiarity with the technology used<\/li><li>Looking at a wide range of print and online media, television and radio<\/li><li>The language used to discuss and describe a current affairs story<\/li><li>Looking at text-speak, synchronous chat, the language of emails, Facebook and Twitter<\/li><li>Reading a text related to the topic (e.g. a review or report) and analysing the language used in it<\/li><li>Considering changing professional roles and the language used to describe them<\/li><li>Considering the questions of standards in global English<\/li><li>Looking at how English has become a global language<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This course will extend the participant\u2019s understanding and critical awareness of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Some general ideas of what constitutes contemporary English<\/li><li>A number of different language corpora, and how these can be useful tools for the teacher and the student<\/li><li>The processes involved in word formation and coinage<\/li><li>The concept of a grammar of spoken English (including vague language, ellipsis, backchannels)<\/li><li>The cultural and intercultural aspects of their topic, their role in social change and popular culture and the language generated by this<\/li><li>A list of lexical items relating to the world of work and particular professional spheres<\/li><li>A list of lexical items relating to loan words<\/li><li>The English \u2018language landscape\u2019 of their own environment<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To know more about the course, watch this introductory video by Nile course leader <strong>Chris Rose<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NILE Online Discover Contemporary English\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UYhoynJpSxM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The course consists of <strong>8 online units<\/strong>, each lasting one week and requiring about 5 hours of individual study and work on Nile&#8217;s online platform. The online work is then explored more in detail during <strong>two face-to-face workshops <\/strong>in Thiene, as well as two online live sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the end of the course, participants have the opportunity to complete a <strong>final assignment<\/strong> that will be graded by the tutor. Those who complete the final assignment will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
